INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2 (20%) – CHANNEL CLIP
1.0 MOOD BOARD:
A mood board is a thoughtfully curated compilation of images, textures, colours, and typography that visually represents a project's mood, style, and creative direction. It acts as a source of inspiration, encourages collaboration, and helps align ideas before the project begins. For Jolin's Vlog, the theme board emphasizes three core concepts: travel exploration, storytelling through visuals, and personal growth. These concepts capture the essence of shaping one’s journey, harmoniously integrating inspiration, creativity, and self-expression into the overall design.
Below is the mood board for the chosen elements:
A
colour scheme is a carefully chosen group of colours used together in a design to
create visual harmony and convey a specific mood or message. For Jolin's
Vlog channel clip, I selected a palette of beige, khaki, chamois, coffee,
and bistre to complement the channel's themes of personal growth, creativity,
and storytelling. These colours work together to create a warm and inviting
visual aesthetic that reflects the channel's essence.
- Beige (#F5F5DC): Acts
as a soft, welcoming base, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere for the
background.
- Khaki (#CBB799): Adds
simplicity and comfort, providing a balanced and natural touch to the
clip.
- Chamoisee (#A07856):
Symbolizes trust and depth, enhancing the elegance and sophistication of
the visuals.
- Coffee (#6F4D38):
Represents groundedness and stability, perfect for conveying creativity
and personal reflection.
- Bistre (#3D211A): Brings richness and depth to the composition, adding variety and visual interest.
This
cohesive colour scheme not only enhances the clip's visual appeal but also
aligns with the channel's identity. It conveys a sense of warmth, authenticity,
and inspiration, ensuring that the channel clip resonates with viewers and
reinforces the theme of shaping one's personal journey.
3.0 TYPOGRAPHY
:
In
this project, I focused on using a consistent typographic style to maintain a
cohesive and visually appealing design for Jolin's Vlog. Typography, the art of
arranging text to make it legible, readable, and aesthetically pleasing, plays
a crucial role in enhancing the audience's engagement and understanding. It
involves the thoughtful selection and arrangement of typefaces, point sizes,
line spacing, and more to communicate a clear and impactful message.
For
Jolin's Vlog, I exclusively used Segoe Script as the primary typography,
aligning it with the tagline and overall visual identity. Segoe Script
is a sophisticated, handwritten-style font that conveys warmth, creativity, and
a personal touch, perfectly reflecting the channel’s themes of travel
exploration, storytelling, and personal growth. Its elegant curves and fluid
strokes harmonize with the vlog's branding, reinforcing the idea of shaping
one’s journey with a sense of inspiration and individuality.
By using Segoe Script consistently across the project, I was able to create a unified and memorable visual identity that resonates with the audience and highlights the vlog’s essence of self-expression and creativity.
4.0 VIDEO
REFERENCE :
Here are some YouTube videos I referenced for transition effects, style, and animation to help develop the channel identity.
For
the audio part, I explored various music tracks to enhance my video’s mood and
transitions. Using the JianYin app, I tested several background music options
to find the one that best complemented the rhythm and flow of the video. After
evaluating four tracks, I selected You and Me because its tempo
and beat aligned perfectly with the video’s transitions and scenes. The smooth
flow from the intro to the main sections elevated the storytelling experience,
creating a seamless connection between visuals and audio.
In
addition to background music, I incorporated sound effects to emphasize key
transitions and interactions within the video. These included effects for scene
changes, pop-ups, and the typewriter animation, adding an extra layer of
engagement and polish to the final product. This combination of music and sound
effects not only enhanced the overall impact but also ensured a dynamic and
immersive viewing experience.
6.0 STORYBOARD
:
A
storyboard is a visual tool used to plan the sequence of events in a video,
animation, or multimedia project. It typically consists of a series of drawings
or images, along with notes and descriptions, to illustrate key scenes,
actions, and elements. This helps creators visualize the flow and structure
before starting production.
6.1 Initial Storyboard with Transition Notes:
For my initial storyboard, I relied on my
creativity, drawing inspiration from reference videos and the actions I wanted
to showcase. I created six scenes that add up to 10 seconds in total. The focus
of my channel is on personal adventures, travel, lifestyle tips, and
spontaneous fun. I designed the channel clip to reflect these themes, so
viewers could easily relate to and understand the content of Jolin's Vlog.
After reviewing the video, I realized that some transitions and actions didn’t flow as smoothly as I had hoped, and there were missing details. As a result, I reworked the scenes, referencing other videos and animations for guidance. I focused on mapping out the movement of each element to improve the execution in Adobe After Effects.
6.2 Updated Storyboard with Transition Methods:
In the updated version of the storyboard, I used After Effects to illustrate the elements, applying different background colours to highlight the unique purpose of each scene. This allowed me to better convey the video’s content.
7.0 STYLE
FRAME :
A style frame is a pre-production visual tool that showcases the appearance and atmosphere of a specific scene in video and animation projects. It defines the visual style, mood, colour palette, and design elements to ensure consistency and alignment among all stakeholders before starting full-scale production. In this part, I divided the process into several key elements:
7.1 Background Colour
I began designing the channel identity by gathering elements from mood boards and Pinterest. My aim was to create a dynamic style for my channel. To do this, I selected five different colours from the palette I chose, assigning each colour to a specific element. This approach adds visual interest while maintaining consistency throughout the design. The colours work together to create a cohesive look, making the content easier for the audience to follow and engage with. By incorporating a range of colours, I was able to highlight key elements, giving the video a vibrant and fresh feel while keeping the message clear and focused.
7.2 Technical Elements
Since
my channel focuses on vlogging themes such as personal adventure, travel,
lifestyle tips, and fun, I selected five key elements to represent these ideas.
Using After Effects, I created graphics for each element: a compass to
symbolize personal adventure, an image of the Earth to represent travel, a
magnifying glass with an eye inside to signify lifestyle tips, a smiling face
to represent sharing fun, and finally, my channel's title, logo, and tagline. I
experimented with different colours for these elements to create a unique and
visually appealing look that aligns with my channel's identity. This approach
allowed me to design a cohesive and engaging visual style that effectively
communicates my channel’s themes.
7.3 Scenes
Scene
1: Compass (Personal Adventure)
The
scene begins with a transition where the compass element slides in from the
lower left at an angle of -300° to the lower right. The compass moves towards
the centre of the screen, where it aligns with the other elements. Finally, the
title "Personal Adventures" appears with a typewriter effect,
completing the introduction to this theme.
Scene
2: Earth (Travel)
The second scene begins with the Earth element, which is animated with a gesture movement created by the Draw effect. As the Earth settles, the title Travel appears below it with a Typewriter effect, adding a smooth and seamless transition to the scene.
Scene
3: Magnifying Glass with Eye (Lifestyle Tips)
In Scene 3, the border inside the magnifying glass is drawn seamlessly from left to right, revealing an eye inside. As it reaches thecentrer, it emphasizes the theme of lifestyle tips. The title Lifestyle Tips then fades in below the magnifying glass, completing the scene with a smooth and cohesive transition.
In scene 4, a smiling face is drawn with a smooth reveal of the smile using the Radial Wipe effect. The title Sharing Fun fades in below the face with a Typewriter Effect, bringing a playful and engaging vibe to the scene.
Scene 5: Vlog Title with Logo and
Tagline
The final scene introduces the
channel title, "Jolin's Vlog." The text begins to appear on-screen
with a sliding transition, with the letter "l" in "Vlog"
replaced by the logo—a hand holding a tripod. The logo element slides in
smoothly from the left to complete the word. Below the title, the tagline
"Record Daily Life" fades in with a soft, elegant motion, aligning
perfectly with the overall theme and wrapping up the sequence with a
professional and cohesive finish.
7.4 TECHNICAL PROCESS: Creating Scenes 1–5 in After Effects
To create the scenes for my channel identity, I started by setting up the composition and designing a gradient background that transitions from dark to light. The colour palette I selected included Beige (#F5F5DC) for a cosy feel, Khaki (#CBB799) for simplicity, Chamoisee (#A07856) for depth, and Coffee (#6F4D38) and Bistre (#3D211A) to convey groundedness and creativity. To link all the elements within the background, I used the Trim Path tool. I set the path to -300 degrees and added keyframes: at 0 seconds, the path was at 0%, and by 0.25 seconds, it reached 100%, allowing the background to smoothly reveal itself.
In Scene 1, I created a compass using the Ellipse Tool and stylized it with strokes andcolourr fills. To animate it, I set keyframes for the position, making the compass slide in from the left corner to the centre. I used the Graph Editor to adjust the easing for smooth and natural motion. Additionally, I applied the Draw effect to each element, making it appear as though they are being drawn onto the screen. For the title Personal Adventure, I used the Typewriter Effect to simulate a gradual typing animation, adding a dynamic and engaging element to the scene.
In Scene 2, I designed a stylized Earth using the Ellipse Tool. Then, I used the Pen Tool to draw specific areas on the Earth and applied the Draw effect to make it look as if those elements were being drawn in real time. For the title Travel, I positioned it below the Earth and used the Typewriter Effect to animate the text, gradually fading it in for a smooth and dynamic introduction.
In
Scene 3, I created a magnifying glass with an eye inside using the Ellipse Tool
and simple ovals. To animate the border inside the magnifying glass, I applied
the Radial Wipe effect, transitioning from 100% to 0%. Additionally, I used the
Draw effect on the other elements to make them appear as if they were being
drawn in real time. The title Lifestyle Tips was positioned beside the
magnifying glass and smoothly faded in using opacity animation for a seamless
and polished effect.
In
Scene 4, I drew a smiling face using the Ellipse Tool for the face and the Type
Tool for the features. To animate the face, I applied the Draw effect, making
it appear as though it is being drawn ireal timeme. For the smile, I used the
Radial Wipe effect to create a smooth reveal. The title Sharing Fun was
positioned below the face and animated using the Typewriter Effect to simulate
gradual typing, adding a playful and engaging touch to the scene.
Finally, in Scene 5, I used the design from the channel banner, incorporating the channel title Jolin's Vlog and replacing the "l" in Vlog with my logo (a hand holding a tripod). The logo slid in from the left and aligned with the text. The tagline Record Daily Life was animated to fade in below the title, with subtle Position and Opacity keyframing, ensuring a smooth and cohesive transition that completed the scene with a polished, professional look.
Each scene was timed for 2 seconds, ensuring smooth transitions and thematic cohesion, resulting in a visually engaging and consistent video identity.

9.0 REFLECTION
:
The idea of the channel ident for Jolin’s Vlog was designed to reflect the themes of personal adventure, travel, lifestyle tips, and sharing fun as I mentioned it is my objective of the Jolin's Vlog Youtube channel. Inspired by the mood board and banner, the ident incorporates a compass, Earth, magnifying glass, smiley face, and my logo. Each element was chosen thoughtfully: the compass symbolizes direction, the Earth represents travel, and the magnifying glass with an eye focuses on discovery. The smiley adds a playful touch, while the logo ties it all together.
The animation uses warm colours like beige, khaki, and coffee, creating a cosy and inviting vibe that complements the channel’s theme of personal growth. For transitions, I used smooth effects, like the typewriter animation and radial wipes, to make the identity engaging and professional.
This ident connects to the channel banner by using the same colour palette, typography (Segoe Script), and logo placement. Both designs share the idea of shaping one’s journey and creating a consistent and recognizable channel identity. Through this process, I aimed to convey the essence of Jolin’s Vlog—a blend of creativity, storytelling, and inspiration.
Creating
my channel identity involved overcoming multiple challenges that required
problem-solving and resourcefulness. One of the difficulties I encountered was
figuring out how to apply specific effects in After Effects. For example, I
didn’t initially know how to use the Radial Wipe effect. To resolve
this, I searched for video tutorials online, which provided clear guidance on
how to implement and customize this effect. These tutorials became invaluable
in helping me learn and apply techniques effectively.
Another
challenge was my lack of experience with transitions. To improve, I explored
various transition styles through YouTube tutorials, practising and adapting
them to suit the themes of my project. This approach not only enhanced the flow
of my scenes but also helped me build confidence in creating professional
animations.
Additionally,
I struggled with choosing audio that aligned with the mood of the video.
However, Jianyin’s extensive sound library offered enough options for me to
experiment with and select the perfect soundtrack to complement the visuals.
Even
when I lost my initial video clip, I used the setback as an opportunity to
recreate the project, applying everything I had learned. These experiences
taught me resilience, adaptability, and the value of continuous learning,
resulting in a more refined and cohesive final product.
